Many people resist the idea of creating an email newsletter. Most of us receive a lot of spam email each day that’s totally unsolicited, and retailers often trick you into opting in to their newsletter when you place an order. It’s estimated that over 300 billion emails are sent each day, and only about 20% of those messages are ever opened. But that’s still a better percentage than direct mail, and sending emails costs you nothing.

One thing that we recommend is “keep in touch, but not too much.” A daily email program is difficult to sustain, and you don’t want your messages to accumulate in someone’s inbox if they go a couple of days without opening their email. Once a week might still be a little much, but if you provide engaging content and keep your message brief, you can sustain engagement with your clients. Be sure to always include an easy unsubscribe option in every message.

You don’t want to do a lot of “selling” in your email marketing. You definitely want to announce special events or promotions, and coupons can be very effective at getting your regular customers through the door. Mainly, you want to keep your product and your brand in the minds of your subscribers. They might not need what you have to offer right away, but when they do, you want to make sure that they come see you first!
